“How many languages do you actually speak?”

I have been asked that question more often than my name. Still, I don’t see my language skills as an achievement of my own — more as a by-product of a turbulent life as a refugee.

My name is Farez Shamoew (alias Patrick Majidi), also known as “Mr. Polyglot”, born near the towering Hindu Kush mountains in the 1990s, without a birth certificate. My childhood was shaped by war, uncertainty and fear. Early on, I learned to take lessons from the darker side of life and from my mistakes, rather than waste time looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. Today I know: that very ability is what makes people successful.

Whoever sees language not just as a sequence of letters but as a piece of music has understood its true power.

Just as a melody moves the heart, our mother tongue touches our feelings — when someone speaks it with the right tone. I learned this lesson while fleeing through different countries, connecting with the local children: every new language was a new melody.

Language can manipulate — but it can also open doors and hearts, tear down walls and build relationships. With every new language I understood people and their way of thinking a little better — and began to recognise the patterns behind communication, trust and conflict. Foreign languages gave me new approaches to old problems.

My apprenticeship and later work as a social insurance specialist in Germany gave me a great deal of experience with people from all kinds of backgrounds. In parallel, I deepened my knowledge of psychology through part-time distance study — knowledge that still shapes me today. My years in sales taught me that the mother tongue is often the strongest selling point — for me too: my language skills opened the door to the steel and foundry industry. And working in marketing showed me how much the right choice of words matters in online and print media.

My love for languages saved me.
By founding Hyperglot Solutions, I pass this strength on.
